How to run a Christmas quiz that people remember

The best Christmas quizzes have one thing in common: everybody at the table gets a round they are good at. Grandparents win the history, teenagers win the films, and the person who has watched Love Actually eleven times finally has a use for it. That is why this quiz is built in rounds, each running from easy to hard, with a kids' round that small children can actually answer.

To host it, pick four to six rounds, ten questions each, and read them out with a pause after every question. Teams of two to four keep it lively. Give one point per answer and two for the final round, so nobody is out of it before the pudding. The print button below opens every round so you can print a question sheet in one go.

Playing on your own? Press start, choose your rounds and you get the score round by round at the end, with the one round worth five minutes of practice before the party.

Host's tip: put the kids' round first and the final round last. Easy questions early get everyone talking; the hard round at the end is where the real argument happens.

Christmas quiz or Christmas trivia?

Same game, two names. In Britain and Ireland it is a Christmas quiz: the office party round, the family quiz after dinner, the pub quiz with a festive theme. In the United States and Canada people usually say Christmas trivia. The questions barely change, though British quizzes lean on Christmas number ones, pantomime and the King's speech, and American ones on Hallmark films and Charlie Brown.

If your table leans American, the Christmas trivia questions have a slightly different mix. Either way, the answers are checked and short enough to read aloud.
