What This Attention Span Test Actually Measures

In 1997, the neuropsychologist Ian Robertson and his colleagues published a task with a sly premise: instead of asking people to spot a rare target, make them respond to everything except one. The Sustained Attention to Response Task, or SART, floods you with go signals until responding turns automatic, then slips in the one digit you must not touch. The moment your mind wanders, your finger keeps tapping, and the task catches the wander in the act.

Our test is a shortened, non-clinical adaptation of that paradigm. Digits 1 through 9 appear one at a time for two minutes; you tap for every digit except 3. Three signals come out of it:

How the Scoring Works

The engine counts three things while you play. Commission errors: you tapped on a 3. Omission errors: a go digit came and went without a tap. Reaction time variability: how much your response speed swings from digit to digit. Each feeds one subscale, and the three combine into a single sustained-attention score from 0 to 100.

One piece of candor that attention-test pages tend to skip: healthy, well-rested adults fail to withhold on a meaningful share of no-go trials. The SART is engineered to induce errors; that is the point of it. A perfect run is rare. And racing through the digits reliably inflates false taps, because speed steals the milliseconds your brain needs to brake. Why Is My Attention Span So Short?
