What a Digit Span Test Actually Measures
Digits flash on screen, one at a time. You type back what you saw. Get it right and the next sequence grows by one digit; miss twice at the same length and that phase ends. It is simple to play and one of the oldest measures in experimental psychology: researchers have used memory span tasks since Joseph Jacobs first measured schoolchildren's spans in 1887.
The test has two halves. Forward span asks you to repeat digits in the order shown. That is pure storage, the raw holding capacity of short-term memory. Backward span asks you to type them reversed, which forces you to hold the digits and rearrange them at once. The extra operation recruits working memory, the mental workspace behind arithmetic, following directions, and keeping a thought alive while someone interrupts you.
The numbers attached to this task are famous. George Miller's 1956 paper in Psychological Review, The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two, put adult span at around seven items. Nelson Cowan's 2001 review in Behavioral and Brain Sciences sharpened the estimate: strip away rehearsal and grouping strategies and the true working memory limit sits near four chunks, plus or minus one. How the Scoring Works
The test adapts to you. Digits appear one every 800 milliseconds; each phase starts short, grows by one digit per correct answer, and ends after two misses at the same length. Your best forward span and best backward span combine into one score, normalized to a 0 to 100 scale so results are easy to read and compare.
The mapping is anchored to published adult norms, not to how other visitors happen to perform:
- A forward span of 6 digits scores 50, the center of the typical adult range.
- 8 digits maps to 75, and 10 or more reaches 95.
- Backward span is graded one digit lower across the board, because reversal is genuinely harder; a backward span of 5 also scores 50.
Four bands describe the outcome: goldfish-adjacent, typical, sharp, and savant-adjacent. One note in defense of the first label: real goldfish are slandered by the three-second myth and remember feeding routines for months. If you land there, suspect a loud room or a short night before you suspect your hippocampus, then take the test again tomorrow.
What Counts as a Normal Digit Span
Most healthy adults recall between 5 and 9 digits forward, with the median around 6 to 7. Backward span runs one to two digits shorter, typically 4 to 5. A 6 forward and a 5 backward is not average in the disappointing sense; it is the textbook profile the norms were built on.

Two caveats keep those numbers honest. First, span is stable but not fixed. Sleep deprivation, stress, alcohol, and divided attention all shave digits off, so a poor score on a noisy commute means very little. Second, this is an exercise you administer to yourself, not a medical evaluation. A digit span score cannot diagnose dementia, ADHD, or anything else. Short-Term Memory Test vs Working Memory Test
The two terms get used interchangeably, and the difference matters more than it sounds. A short-term memory test measures how much you can hold: the phone number between hearing it and dialing it. A working memory test measures what you can do with the held material: reverse it, add to it, compare it against something else. Forward span is the first kind of measure. Backward span is the second, and it is the one researchers care about more.
Working memory predicts everyday performance better than storage does. It tracks with reading comprehension, mental arithmetic, and resistance to distraction, and it is the first thing to buckle under load. When you reach the end of a paragraph with no idea what it said, that is working memory dropping the thread, not storage failing. The fix is rarely trying harder; it is cutting competing load and encoding more deliberately, which is why the techniques that actually make learning stick rely on active recall rather than rereading.
One more distinction worth keeping: span is capacity, not content. Two people with identical spans can differ enormously in what they know, because knowledge lives in long-term memory, a system with no known capacity limit. That is why a memory test and a vocabulary test measure such different things, and why taking both tells you more than either alone.
How to Improve Your Memory Span
Raw span barely budges with training, and honest test pages should say so. Studies of short-term memory training keep finding the same thing: practicing digit recall makes you better at digit recall and little else. What improves dramatically is how much you fit inside the span you already have, and the lever is chunking. Untrained working memory holds about four chunks, but a chunk can be a single digit or an entire structure. In a famous 1980 study in Science, a college runner lifted his digit recall from 7 to 79 by recoding number groups as running times. His span never grew. His chunks did.
