What This Aphantasia Test Measures

Close your eyes and picture a red apple. Some people see it instantly: the skin, the stem, the spot of shine. Others see nothing at all, and never have. This test measures where you sit on that spectrum by asking you to rate the vividness of sixteen mental scenes.

The method comes from the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire, the instrument David Marks published in the British Journal of Psychology in 1973. Fifty years on, it remains the standard tool in imagery research, built on a simple insight: nobody can look inside your head, but your own ratings of what you experience turn out to be stable, consistent, and surprisingly predictive. Our sixteen items are original, written for this test, but they follow the VVIQ blueprint faithfully: four scenes (a familiar face, a sunrise, a shop you know, a landscape), four details each, every one rated from "no image at all" to "as vivid as real seeing."

The word aphantasia is far younger than the questionnaire. Neurologist Adam Zeman coined it in 2015, in the journal Cortex, after describing people who had never formed a mental image in their lives. The idea spread fast, and thousands of readers discovered mid-article that "the mind's eye" was not a metaphor for everyone else.

How Scoring Works, and Where the Cutoffs Come From

You rate sixteen scenes on a five-point scale, from 1 (no image at all, you simply know you are thinking about it) to 5 (perfectly clear, as vivid as real seeing). In research versions of the VVIQ those ratings sum to a raw score between 16 and 80. We convert yours to a 0 to 100 scale for readability, then apply the cutoffs imagery researchers actually use.

A raw score of 32 or below is the conventional aphantasia range, which corresponds to the lowest band here. A raw score of 75 or above is the conventional hyperphantasia range, the top band. Between them sit hypophantasia, the land of dim and unreliable imagery, and the broad territory of typical imagery where most people live.

The extremes are rarer than internet discourse suggests. In Zeman's 2020 study of 1,288 adults, about 0.7 percent of people reported essentially no imagery and 2.6 percent reported imagery as vivid as seeing. When dim imagery is included, prevalence estimates for aphantasia reach roughly 4 percent (Dance, Ipser and Simner, 2022).

One honest caveat: this is a self-report screen, not a medical diagnosis. It measures how you rate your own inner experience, which is exactly what researchers measure too, but no online test can diagnose anything. If your imagery changed suddenly rather than being lifelong, that is worth mentioning to a doctor.

Life Without a Mind's Eye

When Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar, retired and took up meditation, an instructor asked him to visualize a sphere. Nothing came. The man who ran the most celebrated animation studio on Earth discovered, late in life, that his mind's eye was blind. Then he surveyed former colleagues and found some of the industry's best animators shared the trait, including Disney legend Glen Keane, who drew Ariel and the Beast without ever seeing them in his head. That is the correction the research keeps delivering: aphantasia is a difference in how a mind represents the world, not a hole in it. Zeman's 2020 study found people with aphantasia overrepresented in scientific and mathematical work, and people with hyperphantasia in creative professions, with both extremes full of exceptions. On average, aphantasia travels with quieter autobiographical memory and slightly more difficulty recognizing faces, while imagery-free minds often excel at abstraction and spatial reasoning.

In Zeman's original case series, most lifelong aphantasics reported involuntary imagery, including visual dreams, because dreaming runs on different, bottom-up circuitry than deliberate visualization. Can You Train Your Inner Eye?

Honestly: nobody has demonstrated a reliable way to give an aphantasic person mental imagery, and most aphantasics, once they learn the word, are not shopping for a cure. Vividness is a fairly stable trait. But the middle of the spectrum is less fixed than the extremes, and two claims are worth taking seriously.

First, attention changes what you get from a dim image. People with faint imagery often find that slow, detailed recall, holding one object, one texture, one color at a time, yields more than trying to summon a whole scene at once. How do I know if I have aphantasia?

Try to picture the face of someone you love. If you can list facts about it, brown eyes, sharp chin, but nothing visual appears, you may be on the aphantasia end of the spectrum. A VVIQ-style vividness test like this one is the standard first screen researchers use. A score in the lowest band suggests aphantasia, though a self-report test is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

Can people with aphantasia dream?
