Times are the earliest possible. Committees regularly run late, and the announcement happens when the vote is done, not when the clock says so. All six are streamed live by the Nobel Prize organisation.

One detail catches people out every year: the Peace Prize is the only one announced in Oslo. How the Nobel Prize actually works

Most of what people find surprising about the Nobel Prize comes down to four rules that have barely moved in a century.

You cannot apply

Nominations come only from invited nominators: past laureates, senior academics, members of specific institutions. Nominating yourself disqualifies you.

Three people maximum

A prize may be split between at most three laureates. Modern science is done by teams of hundreds, which is why the rule is the single most criticised part of the system.

No posthumous awards

Since 1974, a prize cannot be awarded to someone already dead, unless they die between the announcement and the ceremony. Delay in recognition can therefore be permanent.

The fourth rule is the one that makes Nobel history so hard to write: nominations, shortlists and committee deliberations are sealed for 50 years. We currently know who was nominated up to the mid-1970s and nothing after that. Every claim you read about who was on this year's shortlist is speculation.

The money comes from Nobel's original endowment, still managed by the Nobel Foundation. A full prize is 11 million Swedish kronor. If three laureates share it, they take a third each, and if two share it because one contribution was judged larger, the split can be uneven.

The missing prize, the fake Nobel, and the people who never got one

There is no Nobel Prize for mathematics. The popular story, that Nobel's wife had an affair with a mathematician, fails on the basic fact that Nobel never married. The likelier explanation is duller: his will funded work of practical benefit to humanity, and pure mathematics did not fit that frame. The Fields Medal, established in 1936, filled the gap, though it is awarded every four years and only to mathematicians under 40.

The economics prize is not one of Nobel's. Its full name is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Sweden's central bank created and funded it in 1968 to mark its 300th anniversary, and it was first awarded in 1969. It is announced with the others and presented at the same ceremony, which is why almost nobody outside Sweden makes the distinction.

And then the absences. Mahatma Gandhi was nominated five times and never received the Peace Prize; in 1948, the year of his assassination, the committee declined to award it at all. Lise Meitner, who co-discovered nuclear fission, was nominated dozens of times and never won. Rosalind Franklin died in 1958, four years before the DNA prize her data made possible, and the rules bar posthumous awards.

Two people have refused the prize outright: Jean-Paul Sartre turned down the 1964 literature prize on principle, and Le Duc Tho declined the 1973 Peace Prize because there was no peace in Vietnam yet.
